Each year more and more employers try to motivate employee participation in health and wellness programs with cash incentives alone. Although cash is a powerful tool to boost participation, it may fall short for yielding long-term engagement. When it comes to effective behavior change, an individual's internal or "intrinsic" motivators may be more critical to maintain staying power than "extrinsic" ones such as cash incentives because they get to heart of what a person values most.
Baystate Health, one of the Top 100 Integrated Health Care Systems in the country developed a health and wellness promotion campaign that combined both an intrinsic component with a modest cash incentive. Participation rates remained strong and Baystate saved some precious cash resources. Come learn about this exceptional campaign that features a unique video Baystate created called, "What Inspires You?"

Henry Ford Health System
Wednesday, May 5, 3:30-4:30 pm
We don't give up and we certainly don't give in. We keep plugging away, it's the Michigan way. We know in order to improve we roll up our sleeves and keep on keeping on. Like the man Henry Ford once said, "Don't find fault, find a remedy," Henry Ford the hospital system continued year over year to hone and deliver a successful employee wellness and prevention strategy, which includes the HealthMedia® suite of Digital Health Coaching programs.
To understand the best package for engaging their population, HFHS recently launched an incentive program to reward participants for engaging in these programs, including Health Alliance Plan's (HAP) engagement program and the HealthMedia® Succeed™ Health Risk Assessment. The hospital's hard work paid off. They not only saw significant spikes in HRA enrollment — from 889 participants in 2005 to 5,936 participants in 2009, but after long-term experimentation, they learned which incentive and Digital Health Coaching programs best fit the bill for their population.

There comes a time when an employer or health plan either has to take a road less traveled to address the costly and difficult task of improving lifestyle and behavioral health issues of their population, or continue to walk the same walk and talk the same talk, leading back to the same old problems. But more and more, progressive organizations are recognizing that participant engagement and the overall user experience are the keys to success. Hannaford Supermarkets is an example of an employer who leveraged health promotion and participant engagement to reap Strategic Dividends. Aetna, the nation's third largest health insurer, is an example of a health plan that used their understanding of the customer's health and wellness objectives, corporate objectives, culture, and barriers to improve their ability to engage participants.
In the fall of 2009, Aetna launched HealthMedia® Digital Health Coaching programs to more than 5 million members. To their delight, within three months of launch, participation rates exceeded what had taken THREE YEARS to achieve with a previous vendor! Demand for and innovation of electronic communication channels in the business world continues to rise. Allowing for real-time communication, instantaneous transactions, and mass delivery at the click of a button, e-communications are virtually taking over the way the world does business. But when it comes to health care, many organizations are behind the ball.
A recently published study of employees at 14 large Kansas City-based employers provides insight into the needs and wants of employees concerning the communication methods of employer-sponsored health and wellness programs. The largest group of employees (82.1 percent) preferred email and web-based programs at work, while only 6 percent preferred to receive health information via the telephone.
Ron Goetzel, a nationally recognized expert in large-scale evaluations of health promotion, disease prevention, demand, and disease management programs, will address this and other results of this newly published study that will surprise and intrigue anyone who struggles with helping employees improve unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in the workplace.

While the world focuses on people suffering from anorexia and bulimia, the bigger issue eating away at your health care budget is actually Binge Eating Disorder (BED) — more prevalent than anorexia and bulimia combined. Because BED contributes to obesity and other serious health problems, it is imperative that obesity management programs effectively address it. This session will shed light on this silent disorder, the relationship between obesity and binge eating, and how Digital Health Coaching programs for BED can help health plans and employers recoup millions of dollars in lost productivity and medical expenses annually, and achieve lasting, positive weight management results.

Recent studies have shown that men are far less likely than women to engage in health awareness, prevention, and care. Many men also learn to experience, express and respond to problems in their lives differently than women. With cancer and heart disease being two of the leading causes of death in men, early detection, regular doctors visits, and lifestyle changes could significantly improve long-term wellness and disease management. The same is true for mental health care where men face additional challenges related to stigma and other obstacles to awareness, prevention, and treatment.
This session, led by a leading expert in the psychological study of men and masculinity, will address barriers and challenges surrounding engagement and participation in preventive health care, and will reveal effective strategies employers and health plans can use to tackle these male-specific barriers and improve total-population health on Planet Earth.

In today's competitive global economy, there's widespread pressure to improve ROI from capital assets to human capital investments. Some organizations that are laser-focused on effective management of capital assets aren't paying enough attention to the human capital in their organization. It just hasn't sunk in that the productivity and health of their workforce is far more important than a well maintained copy machine.
Although there are many instruments for measuring productivity impairment, market acceptance of the impact of absenteeism and presenteeism on an organization's profit margin is still very low. More and more, leading health care experts are telling health plans and employers that ignoring productivity in today's competitive market is nothing short of fatal. Hear two leading experts speak on this crucial health care topic.

Passage of mental health parity legislation has triggered anxiety among employers regarding its impact on their health care costs. To make matters worse, ambiguities in the legislation have led to uncertainty about how the law will be enforced. Whatever the outcome, continuing with the current approach to mental and behavioral health care may be even costlier to employers, since it tends to leave those who need the most help out in the cold.
Digital Health Coaching provides an innovative, scalable, cost-effective alternative to traditional care. By removing many of the stigma-related barriers to treatment, it presents opportunities to provide support to millions of employees who are suffering silently. This session will provide you with clarity on the legislation and reveal innovative solutions beyond traditional services.

Next to the federal government, the workplace is where most people get their benefits and in many cases health and wellness services. It’s time to look at healthcare reform from the employer’s perspective regarding their activities to actually improve the health of their workforce and to understand the outcomes of those efforts — what real healthcare reform should be about. Thomas Parry, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Integrated Benefits Institute, will draw upon IBI’s newest research with 480 employers and examine what goals employers are trying to achieve, how they are measuring outcomes, and what difference it all makes to their businesses.
Dr. Parry will share his insights and the latest evocative research by IBI. Most recently, Dr. Parry directed research on a study analyzing the impact of linking medical care and disability data, and research on how Chief Financial Officers link workforce health to business outcomes. He also was principal investigator on a national survey of current employer programs and future employer plans to manage health and related productivity.
