In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia, and millions more are struggling with binge eating disorder. In spite of the unprecedented growth of eating disorders in the past two decades, research continues to be under-funded, insurance coverage for treatment is inadequate, and societal pressures to be thin remain rampant.
The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by eating disorders, will carry out NEDAwareness Week February 22-28, 2009. The aim of NEDAwareness Week is to prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment.
Through a collective effort of individuals committed to raising awareness of the dangers surrounding eating disorders and the need for early intervention and treatment, NEDA will organize events, share stories, and distribute educational materials at schools, fitness centers, offices, community centers, places of worship, and other venues during the last week of February.
Effective, long-lasting treatment and prevention of eating disorders is possible. NEDAwareness Week is the perfect time for health plans and employer groups to bring eating disorder awareness and education to their population by getting involved, accessing resources, or finding out about a local event.
